Having pretty much decided to get into some painting I want to get models painted that will allow me to play a game without using the unpainted models, well in the main anyway. For this to work I figure that I need the following: -
1. The Abomination
2. 20 Walkers (including any Very Infected People models)
3. 8 Runners
4. 6 Fatties
5. 6 Survivors
In order to take the principal to Toxic City Mall I will also need: -
6. The Toxic Abomination
7. 10 Toxic Walkers
8. 4 Toxic Fatties
9. 8 Toxic Runners
10. 6 Zombivors corresponding to the Survivors above
There are more models than that but this should be enough to get started.
We have had discussions about differentiating the Toxic models. The plan to make this plain by having green toxic puddles painted on the Toxic model bases and to use green washes on the skin. The standard models will have plain grey bases and use purple and brown washes on the skin.
There is a lot to be getting on with.
In terms of Survivors with their Zombivors I have Elsa and Chef Ramsay. I have decided that Phil and Wanda will be next to the party. I need to finish off painting the Survivor models for these and start their Zombivors.
So how will they play? Lets look at the Zombivor rules for them.
I like Phil. He starts with a gun and as such finds himself in the thick of the action from the first turn. Usually going second or third to allow a door to be opened and targets to present themselves.
As a Zombivor he maintains his Ranged shooting emphasis. This is very 'in character' and I like it. At Yellow level he gets +1 free Renged Action.
At Orange level he gets +1 to dice roll: Ranged. The alternative is that he can take Regeneration. At the end of the games round Phil discard any Wounds received, unless he is killed.
At Red level he gets +1 die: Ranged which is nice but there is also the choice of Sniper where he can choose his target. Great for dealing with those difficult Runners. The other option is Gunslinger which means he treats all Ranged weapons as if they have the Dual symbol. He can shoot two Ranged weapons at the same time. Yippee Kay Ah, Mother F***er!! lol. Now that is some serious firepower.
The Wanda Zombivor has some big changes to be aware of and this will surely change her roll. The Wanda Survivor is all about speed and slipping by zombies, often in the nick of time to win the game. The Zombivor loses the Slippery ability and instead is turned into a Combat monster. The group will need Zombivor Elsa to slide by zombies now.
At Yellow level gain +1 free Melee Action.
At Orange level gain +1 to dice roll Melee or Regeneration. (same as for Phil above)
At Red level gain +1 die: Combat. The alternatives here are +1 Zone per Move (3 zones per move) of Death Grasp. Combat is most likely to be the direction of travel here.
My Survivor Group
So far I have chosen: -
Chef Ramsay for his Born Leader ability and Combat skills late in the game.
Elsa, the cat burglar, to open doors and slide by Zombies as a Zombivor with Rotten to win games.
Phil, the policeman, as he starts with a gun and develops good ranged abilities later on.
Wanda, the roller waitress, for her speed at the beginning of the game and combat skills late on.
I have two more to choose and a lot to think about to give a good balance to the group.
Neema is an option for Tanking abilities, Raoul as a potential Healer, Derek is a Ranged weapons man (although I already have Phil), Ned with his free Search skill, Josh, Doug or Amy. I have more reading up to do before the final decision is in.
Now lets break out those Toxic Zombies and sort our a colour scheme :-)

Zomtober 2015
Inspired by the blogging community I have joined the fun that is Zomtober 2015. This is my first ever community painting excursion and I am feeling excited and enthused. Its a great idea!
The rules
The Zomtober rules are simple. To take part you just need to paint one Zombie or Survivor (or more!) each week, in any scale you like, posting it to your blog by the Sunday (we use Sunday's as the end of each Zomtober week). So that means one or more minis each week on or before the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of October 2015.
For more information visit for full details.
For week 1 I had been working on the two Elsa's and the Abomination.
So by Sunday morning (The end of week 1) my painting table looked like this.
The two Elsa's and the Abomination have been decently painted.
The original Survivors have a basic paint job but need much more in the way of detail, faces, eyes, highlights etc.
The Toxic City Mall Survivors and Zombivors have been base coated and one or two have had a first coat, block colour trial.
Chef Ramsay has had a very quick bit of painting but also lacks detail, face, eyes etc.
I also have the joy of playing with the Very Infected People (VIP's) box set. There are five basic types and a few of them look really cool including - Hot Dog Man. I love him to bits. Will he be a Chilli Dog, or maybe Mustard Man? I am tickled pink by the possibilities. They are about to be base coated.
Other than that I have the two boxes of Zombies, the original box set 13 of which seen some paint with one of the Fatties having a decent paint job, lots of detail picked out etc and then the Toxic City Mall zombies, none of which have seen any paint.
My plan is to achieve a couple of things: -
1. Get some of the Survivors and their Zombivors properly painted. I have targeted Phil, Wanda and Chef Ramsay for starters
2. Increase the number of Zombies available by getting stuck into some of the VIP's
3. Finally, if I get around to it, increase the number of painted Runners available

Elsa zombivor painting
I had some fun with this. Using the new technique I felt much braver. I piled on the grey coats and then started to knock it back with the blacks. It really is very effective indeed. The model looks good on the board although it may need a little more in the way of a final black wash.
There is a lot of detail to take account of, with many tears in the catsuit, some of which I only noticed a little late and under the microscope. I love the sword and it always feels good to get the 'gore' on the model. Blood and guts - you got to love it. Hands bathed in blood, oh Yes!
I rewarded myself by finally allowing myself to paint the Abomination. I had no real plan - I just went for it. He is a proper lump and was great fun.
The idea is that he has burst out of one of those orange boiler suits and green wellington boots. I went for that dirty look with some purple washes, lumps of bone sticking out everywhere and then 'gore', lots of it. He looks good on the board and will be something for everyone to run away from - well that is unless you have a Molotov Cocktail of course.
The two girls remind me of the Victorias in Malifaux. Pity they can't team up. Ah well.

Elsa Zombivor statistics
Well, as I move on to paint the Elsa Zombivor I thought it might be an idea to look at her statistics.
Break-in is retained at Blue level. This is a silent door opening ability. Silent is now important!
Yellow level gives a free Ranged Action.
At Orange level (this is where it gets interesting) Slippery is still available but Rotten is introduced as an option. Rotten allows Elsa to be totally ignored by all Zombies. This has exciting possibilities. For it to come into play, Elsa must not make a noise in her turn and not take a combat action. She can move freely. It fits in really well with the whole 'cat burglar' theme. Late in the game with lots of Zombies around this could be a fantastic rule to allow the claiming of objectives. I just knew I would like this girl.
Finally there are options for Red level a) +1 free move which could be very handy especially combined with Rotten b) +1 free Combat Action or c) Super Strength which converts all Melee weapons to damage level 3 making her an aggressive combat monster.
I like the Rotten and +1 free Move Action combination.
It could be handy to have Elsa combining Rotten with Break-in to open difficult to get at doors maybe before someone in the group hits Red level.
Elsa is definitely an cool option and could be very helpful for the group. Turning her into a Zombivor early might also be worth consideration, but only after she has hit Orange level for the Rotten skill.
And lets face it - she looks fantastic ;-)

Survivor Elsa the cat burglar
I spent some time at the painting table and made great use of the magnifier to bring Elsa to life. I used the painting plan that I discussed in my previous post. I am quite happy with the result.
I got the facial detail without swamping the model with paint. The definition is retained. I did the eyes and got them on the first attempt. This has been a historic issue for me. I find the pupil very difficult. On this occasion I went with the small vertical black line over the white eyeball. I then covered the the over paint with flesh colour both under and over the eye.
The flesh tones worked out OK. I can do better on this front but that will be for another day.
I used grey paint with blue washes on the guns. There is a final highlight to pick up the top most edges.
I used the light grey layering technique on the cat suit and a black wash to knock it back. The wash worked really well. I was worried that is was all too grey at one point. I used the white hair line highlight very sparingly and it does draw the eye.
The hair was a mess and it took several attempts. I had over used the highlights at one point such that it was really distracting. I knocked it all back and just picked out some of the edges in the end.
I still have the Zombivor to do. I plan to follow a different route for the catsuit. Robert Audin commented that he paints the black areas dark grey, then adds highlights and finally knocks it back with black washes. I think that this sounds good and I am looking forward to trying it out.

Elsa, the cat burglar, the painting plan
I am an attack minded individual. It just seems to be the way I am wired. In 40k I play Orks and just love their fast moving approach to battle. Move quickly into position and plant a well placed choppa or two. You get used to the mind set.
In Zombicide I also like the fast moving characters. Wanda is a particular favourite, what with her being on roller skates and getting to move two squares instead of one.
I discussed the four new characters in Toxic City Mall on a previous post with the result that Elsa, the cat burglar has become a likely favourite for me. I like the free door opening action and later she gains Slippery and enhanced movement making her a potential game winner. Should suit my style of play. As a result she will be first to enter the painting arena.
All the models I have painted so far have had a basic paint job, good enough to get them onto the playing table. At tournaments this used to be defined as having 'at least colours on the model'. I have done a bit better than that and have applied washes and highlights but it is still fairly basic. Works well on the gaming table though.
With Elsa I plan to spend some more time and get some of the detail painted. I want to get some good detail on the face so eyes and lips etc. This will be tough as the model is so small but lets see. I am conscious that I need to get it right first time or I will lose the definition on the models face. Very light layers of paint is the plan.
I want to make a much better job of the skin and get some highlights on the raised surfaces.
The mad auburn hair will be a challenge. It should offset the black very nicely and frame the face perfectly. More reason to get the face right.
Finally I want to paint the catsuit black and achieve highlights. I am a great user of the 'wash' technique and this is much less effective on black. I contemplated 'copping out' and going for a blue cat suit but decided against that line of action. I think that using an extreme highlight might work better to give the effect of light bouncing from the black latex. The plan is to go for black with grey layered highlights. Then wash with a very watered down black for a shine. Follow this with a near white highlight.
Lets see how things pan out ;-)

Toxic City Mall, Zombicide expansion
After enjoying a fantastic day of Zombicide I decided that I 'needed' to get the expansion myself and explore the new characters, paint the zombivors for the the first survivors set and have a play with the new toxic zombies.
The zombivors are cool models and I am looking forward to spending some time with them. I have sorted out the paint set from the garage and am getting ready to make a start.
The zombivors for Phil, Ned, Amy, Wanda, Doug and Josh come with the expansion. I thought they could be bought separately but I couldn't find them for sale on their own. As usual the level of detail is really good and they will be a joy to have a go at.
There are also four new characters, each with their own zombivor.
We have Elsa, Neema, Raoul and Derek.
Lets start by having a look at Elsa, the cat burglar.
The model is super sexy with lots of curves to tackle as well a mountain of red hair. Should be really interesting to paint. I struggle to achieve a good look with black but I am determined to do a good job on the catsuit. She has that zipper a long way down which should provide some interesting contrast.
Elsa has the 'breaking' skill which is very appropriate. The rule allows Elsa a free move when opening doors and she does not have to have a piece of equipment with the door opening rule. Very handy indeed. As she advances her skills she gains Slippery at Orange level plus either 1 free Move Action or 2 zones per Move Action. This could be very useful towards the end of a game. The other options are to give her +1 free Ranged Action at Orange level and then +1 free Combat Action at Red level. I suppose that could depend on what the group needs and how she is armed. It does feel like the enhanced movement is the way to go though.
Next we have Neema, the executive.
Neema has the 'Born Leader' skill. This was discussed when I had a look at Chef Ramsay. A very good skill for the group as it gives one extra action to any member of the team.
At Orange level there are two directions that can be taken a) a free Combat Action which stacks with either a free Melee Action or free Ranged Action at Red level or b) she can be turned into a tank with 'Is that all you've got'. This allows her to discard equipment instead of getting wounds. At Red level this can be combined with Tough, where you ignore the first attack from a single Zombie.
Neema feels like she would be great for the group and the tank option means that she will play very differently from anyone else. I can't wait to try her out.
Next comes Raoul, the contractor.
His standard skill is Webbing. This means that everything he holds is as if it was in his hand. This could be handy to give options later in the game. He could be holding guns and still use hand to hand weapons or door opening weapons without loosing an Action.
At Orange level he gets Hoard or Medic. Hoard allows him to hold an extra piece of equipment whereas Medic allows him to Heal one survivor per turn by removing a Wound Card. They must be in the same zone though. Medic sounds like the way to go here. At Red level there is the option to get +1 free Melee Action, +1 Ranged Action or +1 to dice roll: Ranged. I suppose that will depend to what the group needs at that point in the game.
So he is an 'all rounder' with the Medic skill setting him apart.
Finally we have Derek, the locator.
Derek starts with +1 max range. This can be handy throughout the game. At Orange level there are again two main choices for the character a) go all out for Melee with +1 free Melee Action and combine this with +1 to dice roll: Combat at Red level or b) Toxic immunity and with +1 free Move Action or Slippery at Red level. Toxic Immunity mean that Derek is not effected by Toxic Blood spray.
In fact there are a few possible combinations here. Toxic immunity could be combined with +1 to dice roll: Combat.
It is a bit of a confusion really. The base skill of +1 max Range means that Derek should be armed with guns and the like, so this does not really sit with Melee benefits or Combat skills. I think that the way to go here is Toxic immunity followed by +1 free Move Action. This should keep Derek mobile and allow him to operate shooting from maximum range.
So in Summary - Elsa is a movement specialist, Neema is a Tank, Raoul is a healer and Derek is a ranged weapons specialist. Different play styles should make for interesting Survivors groups. A good addition to the base game. I like it.
Now - lets get the paints out :-)
